Magic Lantern: Recent Acquisitions in Contemporary Art at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem
From November 8th 2011
The works in this exhibition, all of which are new in the Museum’s collection, are linked by a shared theme: enchantment.
Magic Lantern embraces a range of mediums (installation, photography, video, film), hearkening back to the earliest way in which images were projected onto a screen. Whether depicting interiors or landscapes, the works invoke the world of legend, fairy tale, and daydream: imaginary journeys, blurred silhouettes in the mist, flickering flames, or dark forest shadows.
Participating artists include Tacita Dean, Dana Levy, Jonathan Monk, Adrian Paci, and Yehudit Sasportas.

Land of Promise – Contemporary Israeli Video Art
Hagit Peleg-Rotem
This “one screen” video art exhibition shows artworks of Israeli reference – a term of double meaning in Hebrew, used here to imply specific geographical sites as well as conceptual, socio-cultural essence. Put together, these artworks portray a mosaic of views and present moments of grace, of bursting beauty or of meditation, human reality and landscapes. I believe in the power of these artworks to endear Israeli art to the hearts of young and old audiences, Israelis and foreign alike.
This is not a billboard image of Israel. These are the fruits of talent and hard work, reflecting the personal perceptions of the artists, from their diverse angles. Exposure to art and its messages is a multi-layered experience of intellectual, sensual and emotional stimuli. The exhibition is an opportunity for us, their audience, to join in and again reflect on it from our point of view.
The Gallery talk will present more information about the artists, emphasizing points of interest and major issues in each artist’s line of work. It will elaborate about the specific works included in the exhibition – putting them in context, answering viewers’ questions and enabling open discussion.
